Life at Thrive
Wondering what a year at Thrive actually looks like? Here's the full picture — from your first class to our big spring show, and everything in between. We believe families do best when they know what to expect, so consider this your guide to life at Thrive.
The Season at a Glance
Our season runs August through the end of May, with a shorter summer session available each summer for dancers who want to keep moving (or just try something new).
At the end of each season, families are not automatically re-enrolled — you'll re-register if you'd like to continue with us the following season. We like to think of it as a fresh, intentional choice each year, not something you're locked into.
Flexible by design. Unlike many studios that require a full season or semester payment up front, Thrive offers month-to-month tuition. The longest a family is ever truly committed to is one month at a time. We also offer autopay to make things simple if you'd rather not think about it at all.
Most of our families stay with us for the full season — and we hope yours does too — but we know life happens. If you need to end enrollment mid-season (families sometimes wrap up in December, for example), you're free to do that. It's just not something we actively encourage, because we love having your dancer for the whole journey.
Whatever you're building, we're here to help you take the first step with confidence.
Thrive is a non-competitive studio — and we want you to know exactly what that means for your dancer.
-
We're deeply committed to excellent training and real opportunity for every dancer here. We also believe just as deeply in balance — which means we intentionally don't overload dancers' schedules or their still-developing bodies with more classes and training than they need. Instead, that time and energy goes toward something else: our staff pouring into dancers as whole people, not just performers chasing a placement.
We know there can be a perception that "non-competitive" means "less rigorous," and we want to gently push back on that. At Thrive, you'll find a high standard of training and a genuine commitment to joy, community, and balance — because we don't think dancers have to choose between the two.
-
Community and joy aren't an afterthought here. They're the point.
We're also proud to offer something increasingly rare: a human-centered, screen-free activity where dancers connect in real life — to each other, to their teachers, and to something bigger than themselves.
Your dancer is in trained, trusted hands. All Thrive staff are background-checked and trained not just in dance, but in supporting dancers through transitions and emotional regulation — because we're shaping whole humans, not just technique.
Performance Opportunities
Growing through Thrive’s levels
A season at Thrive looks a little different depending on your dancer's age and level — because what a 3-year-old needs to thrive is different from what a teenager working toward pointe or company opportunities needs. Here's how that plays out.
Curious how dancers move between age groups or levels throughout their time with us? We've got a whole page dedicated to walking you through that process here.
-
Consistency and connection are everything at this age.
Watch Weeks — Three times each season, we invite families in for the last 15 minutes of class. Some weeks feature a dance the class has prepared, some give you a real look at how we teach, and some invite you to join in and learn alongside your dancer. These are some of our favorite weeks — equal parts sweet and community-building.
Consistent curriculum — All classes within an age group (say, all 3–4 year old classes) run on the same general curriculum throughout the season. That means if your dancer misses a class, our admin team can help you find a makeup class at any point during the season — it doesn't have to be the same week.
-
As technique becomes a bigger focus, class time shifts a bit — but so do the opportunities.
One Watch Week per season, held in December.
Community Classes — Two 6-week sessions each year (fall and spring) let dancers explore styles outside their regular ballet, tap, and jazz classes — think modern, hip hop, musical theater, acro, and more.
-
Our oldest dancers have the most flexibility — and the most opportunity.
Every dancer at Thrive must take at least one ballet class to enroll in other styles, and Company dancers build on that foundation with opportunities like:
Assistant Teacher Program
Teacher Training Program
Momentum: Student Choreography Show — an additional performance and mentorship opportunity (details above under Performance Opportunities), offered every other season
Convention — a weekend of taking classes at a dance convention
Team-building events all season long — an August welcome event (with a photo shoot!), a holiday party, and volunteer opportunities like Halloween in Brown Park
Special costume fitting sessions
Extra workshops and master classes
What to Expect on Your First Day
Getting started at Thrive is simple. Bring your dancer into our lobby, help them change into their shoes (usually ballet), and from there, our staff will walk younger dancers to class — older dancers are welcome to head in on their own.
We keep a fairly small lobby, so most families use class time to run an errand, grab a coffee, or just enjoy a few minutes to themselves — we're in St. Matthews, close to plenty of shops, a park, and coffee spots nearby. You're always welcome to stay and wait if you'd like.
You'll also notice we don't have observation windows into the classrooms. That's intentional — it helps dancers stay focused and present rather than watching for a parent through the glass. That said, we know separation can be hard for some dancers, and we're always happy to work with your family through those transitions.
However you're feeling on day one, start at the front desk. Our staff are friendly, trained, and ready to help you get where you need to go.
How We Stay in Touch
We keep communication simple and mostly email-based, with text reminders for the things you won't want to miss. Have a question, need to talk through a schedule change, or just want to say hi? We're reachable at:
Call or text: 502-325-3818
For our Company-level families, we also use the Band app — a child-safe platform where we share rehearsal videos, music, quick updates, and RSVPs for company events.
Special Weeks + Traditions at Thrive
Halloween Costume Week
Dancers in all levels are invited to wear costumes to class leading up to Halloween. As you can tell, we don’t have any fun here…
Spread the Love Week
Our signature Thrive tradition. Dancers wear PJs to class, and we spend the week surprising dancers, families, and staff with appreciation treats.
We're a team of people who care deeply about our families, and we want that to be felt — not just said. If you have questions, or if something in your family's life calls for a little flexibility or a different conversation, please reach out. We're always willing to talk through special circumstances.

Because we offer month-to-month tuition, you're never locked into more than a month at a time. For the specifics on how to end enrollment, refunds, and timing, see our Policies page.

All of that lives on our Season Calendar page, updated each year.

The spring recital is opt-out, meaning we assume every dancer will participate unless we hear otherwise from you in writing. The Holiday Performance Tour, on the other hand, is opt-in — you'll need to sign up if your dancer wants to take part.
-
Not at all. For our littles, classes within the same age group run on a consistent curriculum, so our admin team can help you find a makeup class at any point during the season — no need to match the exact day or time missed. Reach out to us and we'll get you scheduled.
-
No. The Holiday Performance Tour costume is a rental — you'll return it after the season. The spring recital costume is yours to keep, and includes a pair of tights at no additional cost.

No — we're intentionally non-competitive. We hold a high standard for training while keeping balance, joy, and community at the center of what we do. You can read more about our approach above.

We have a full page dedicated to walking through our placement and leveling process — you can find it here: Placement & Levels.

Mostly by email, with text reminders for time-sensitive things. Company-level families also use the Band app for rehearsal videos, music, and RSVPs. Prefer to just call or ask a question directly? We're at hello@thriveschoolofdance.com or 502-325-3818.
-
We don't have observation windows, so we ask most families to drop off and head out — it helps dancers stay focused. That said, we know transitions can be tough for some dancers, and we're always happy to work with your family through that. Plus, we do build in Watch Weeks throughout the season just for this reason!
-
In the case of inclement weather, power outages, or other emergencies, we'll communicate any studio closures via email, text, our website, and social media. Please note: we don't always follow JCPS closings, so be sure to check Thrive communications directly rather than assuming. All planned studio closures will be announced. You can also keep track of them here.
